 The number of vape pen puffs that you need to take to get high is dependent on:

1. The %THC

Vape pens usually contain a combination of nicotine, cannabis oil, water, food-grade flavoring, and vegetable glycerin/propylene glycol. Cannabis contains two important compounds;

 Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

While the former is an anti-inflammatory agent, the latter is what makes you high.

THC does this by reacting with the cannabinoid receptors in your brain and increasing your dopamine levels.

As such, the higher the concentration of THC in your vape pen, the higher it will make you. This concentration is usually between 50% to 95%. 

Keep in mind that it depends on the form of CBD oil present in the pen. The two forms available are:

Distillates: these THC oils are used in many vape pens. They are made by stripping extracts of compounds like terpenes. This makes them highly concentrated; around 85% to 90%

Live resins: these are designed to maintain as many of the elements of the hemp plant as possible. 

As such, live resins aren’t typically as concentrated as distillates. They average between 65% to 95% THC

Whichever form of THC oil is in your cannabis vape pen though, it will have a higher concentration than a weed joint. The latter has a THC concentration of 10% to 30%.

Your genes can affect how tolerant you are to THC. After all, the receptor that THC reacts with (CB1) has 15 variations that have been identified so far.

This means that different people will experience different levels of intoxication when they take the same concentration of THC. 

Beyond that, these different tolerances can further be affected by how long you have been taking cannabis.

Generally, the longer you have been taking cannabis, the harder it is for you to get high. It also makes you more dependent on the drug. 

Other effects of long-term cannabis use are brain development issues and cognitive impairment.

But if you stop taking cannabis after you notice your dependence or other effects, your tolerance goes back down and the effects can dissipate. Such a break is what is known as a  T break.

However, you’ll need to take a break of at least 3 weeks for all the THC to leave your system. Be prepared to experience withdrawal symptoms in this period though, especially in the first week.

These can include restlessness, lack of appetite, cravings, irritability, and sleeping problems. But if you eat well, stay hydrated, exercise regularly, and avoid drugs, you can prevent a lot of these symptoms.

How many vape pen puffs should you take to get high?

When you first start vaping, start with just one puff, even if your pen has 65% THC. Once you see how it makes you feel, you can up your dosage. 

To be safe, wait for at least 30 minutes before taking another puff; vaping takes a while to hit.

Once you get high though, you can stay that way for up to 3 hours. For the most part, only experienced users should try taking two or more per session.
